[5]Whehhistoricalmyths,traditions,ormiss,ihehistorianhastoacceptthemasmaioicsorcivilizatioiontowhichtheybeloeheuanding,thedisgsympathythatallmaionsoflife。Butthedoeoftheusefulmythis,tohim,ofnoapplitothepresent。Nodoubtthehistorianbesoinamythofhisowndaythathedassuch;hishistorywillsufferfromit,butitdoesnotnecessarilydestroyhisexce,reatness,asahistorian。

[6]AndIthinkImayaddthatnotIpersonallybutallprofessionalhistoriansdopossessakindoffamiliaritywiththepastthatshouldnotbeuhatgreatargumeclaimtohavelyauthenticmessage,butedevoteourselvestothedegofitwithasiiohusiasmandabstrag,ttheircase,supported,mostlikely,bymythigsofthepast。Eveo,weotsuppressthosevoicesorpreventothersfromlisteningtothem;weshallourselvesattimesfiandinspiration。Measwillproysteriouscourseastheyhavealwaysdootheshapingofithowmuchthepasttributes,andhowmuchtheurgethatisinmaivepowers,welyguess。Butshallhistoriansthereforekeepsilefulfillourfun,whichis,tothebestofourability,toshowupthemythsaheworldallwedaboutpastreality—inshitimateuseaheabuseofhistory。
