在很久很久以前，有四个小孩子，他们是：
薇兰、史林白，盖伊和赖内。

他们都寻思着要去环游世界开开眼界。有一次，他们真的买来艘大船准备环游世界，然后走陆路从另一条线路回来。他们的船儿是蓝色的，带绿点儿；船帆是黄色的，画着红条条。他们远航的时候，带了只小猫咪上船，猫咪不但负责掌舵，还料理船上的杂务。船上还有个老怪兽，名叫“狂怪王”，负责做饭煮茶；他们还带了把大水壶上船。

他们登上岛，四处望，岛上居然啥都没有，除了遍地的牛肉饼和巧克力糖块。他们又爬上那棵孤零零的大树，想看看有没有人，可他们在树顶待了一星期，连个人影都没见着。因此他们断定此地没有居民。于是他们下了树，拾起成千上万的牛肉饼和巧克力糖块，装了满满一船。这些东西他们吃了整整一个多月，在这一个多月里，他们一路向前，时而兴奋，时而无聊。

他们继续前进，又来到了一个国家，那里到处长满了巨大的橘子树，树上果实累累。他们急忙登陆，把大水壶也带下了船，想用它来盛橘子。正在这时，刮起了一阵大风，把薇兰帽子上的鹦鹉尾巴毛吹剩了没几根。这还算不上什么呢，更倒霉的是，成千上万的橘子从树上落下来，噼里啪啦砸在他们的脑袋上，他们使出浑身劲儿，慌忙逃命。橘子还乒呤乓啷砸在大水壶上，听了让人毛骨悚然。
最终，他们顺利逃回船上，吓得不轻，伤得也不轻。“狂怪王”的右腿被砸得够呛，他只好一整个星期都坐着，然后把头伸进拖鞋里休息。
